MASTIC ASPHALT

Asphalting is a recognised specialist trade in the building industry and the type of asphalt primarily applied to buildings for the purpose of waterproofing is known as mastic asphalt.

Most asphalt is synthetically made today from petroleum, grit, sand and bitumen. However, large amounts of asphalt can be found in concentration in nature such as the pitch lake in Trinidad and Tobago, with some other sites in South America.

Asphalt has been used by mankind for waterproofing purposes for thousands of years, mentioned in historical writings by the Greeks and the Egyptians. Today, asphalt is used to seal roofs, basements (tanking), front entrance steps, roof top car parks, driveways, domestic and industrial floors, fish ponds and swimming pools. It is most often black in colour, but can also be red, green and white. Heated to temperatures of around 210 – 220°C (410F) this thermoplastic substance is extremely durable and with maintenance (usually solar-reflective paint for exposed areas) can last in excess of 50 years.

To become an asphalter requires a four year apprenticeship in England. On completion the applicant is granted a City & Guilds qualification and an individual number from M.A.C. (Mastic Asphalt Council). Indeed, asphalters can truly call themselves craftsmen as all their tools for applying asphalt are made by hand from wood. These are referred to as ‘floats’ and need replacing periodically, with hard woods preferred. Typically, most jobs consist of a ‘flat’ (horizontal) area, surrounded by an upstand (vertical) detail with the two being joined by a 45° angle fillit.

Nowadays, most asphalt is heated and mixed in machines powered by gas but, back in time it was mixed in giant pots (cauldrons) heated by coke and mixed by hand. Asphalt needs to be mixed continuously so the heavy components do not sink.

With its reliability and versatility mastic asphalt is truly the Rolls Royce of waterproofing!
